1. Introduction
- Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute (MDRRI) was founded in January 1977 at Thoi Thanh village, O Mon district, Can Tho province.
- The Resolution no. 41 NN-TC/QĐ and named the Mekong Delta Agricultural Technology Center.
The thirtieth foundation anniversary of Institute.
1. Introduction
- The location was suggested in 1975 by Dr Luong Dinh Cua, a prominent Vietnamese agronomist ( nhà nông học lỗi lạc của Việt Nam).
- It was to be in a central region of the Delta, and close to the city of Can Tho and its university.
- The Institute receives strong government investment, local provinces and has strong links with many other organizations. In the first days of its establishment, MDRRI received valuable assistance from the Government of India.
- At present, the Government of India still provides annual PhD scholarships to young MDRRI scientists. 
- To carry out research on rice and other major crops in the Mekong Delta.

3. Education and Training
- In 2005, the Institute has deployed the PhD program in Genetics and Plant Breeding.
Since 1997 : the Southern Technical School for Engineering and Agriculture was found.
The School teaches the latest trade and farm skills needed to manage a farm profitably.
A College of Agriculture is now being planned to train technicians and researchers.
- In 2006, an official website of Institute was opened. This website supply a lot of necessary information to farmers.
- The growth of the Mekong Delta agriculture during the past 30 years, is closely linked with the development of the Institute through researches done and technologies generated.
- Nowadays, this Institute has become necessary for Mekong Delta people’s crops .
