The way to change sentences from direct speech into reported speech:

a) Thay đổi ngôi ( persons) và tính từ sở hữu ( possessive adjectives).
+ first pesons( ngôi thứ nhất): I, me, my, mine, myself, we, us, ours, our, ourselves được đổi theo ngôi của chủ từ của mệnh đề tường thuật.
Example: John said: “ I live in Buon Ma Thuot City”.




 John said that he lived in Buon Ma Thuot City.
+ second persons( ngôi thứ hai): được đổi theo túc từ của mệnh đề tường thuật, và được đổi thành ngôi thứ ba nếu mệnh đề tường thuật không có túc từ.
Example1: He said to me , “ You can take my book”.
 He told me that I could take his book.


Example2: The boss said, “ You can have a day off”.
 The boss said that he could have a day off.
b, Lùi Lại Một Thì So Với Câu Trực Tiếp:


Examples:
1. “ There are five people in Hoa’s family”
 Nam said there were five people in Hoa’s family.

2. “ I will go to Hue ”
 Hung said he would go to Hue.




c) Thay đổi các từ chỉ thời gian ( time words) và nơi chốn ( place words).


Examples:
Ex1: “ I must leave now” , said John.
 John said that he had to leave then.


Ex2: “ We have an English class tomorrow”
 They said they had an English class the next day.

d)Khi tường thuật câu hỏi trực tiếp ở dạng Yes – No, ta viết if/ whether sau mệnh đề tường thuật; hoán đổi vị trí của trợ động từ với chủ từ( nếu là trợ động từ “do” thì bỏ đi;đặt dấu chấm ở cuối câu; và sau đó đổi theo nguyên tắc.
Khi tường thuật câu hỏi, chúng ta thường dùng các động từ tường thuật sau: ask, want to know, inquire, wonder….
Examples:
Example 1: Mary said to Nam, “ Can you speak English?”


 Mary asked Nam whether he could speak English.
Example 2: “ Do you go to school?” he asked.
 He asked me if I went to school.
e) Đối với câu hỏi lấy thông tin ( Wh – questions), ta viết từ để hỏi ngay sau mệnh đề tường thuật và chuyển theo qui tắc.
Example: “ What do you read?”
 He asked me what I read.

a. “ This birthday cake is delicious”

 Uncle Hung said that birthday cake was delicious.
b. “ I love these roses”.

 Miss Nga said that she loved those roses.
c. “ I’m having a wonderful time here”
 Cousin Mai said she was having a wonderful time there.




d. “ I will go to Hue tomorrow”.
 Mr Chi said he would go to Hue the following day.
e. “ I may have a new job”.
 Mrs Hoa said she might have a new job.
f. “ I must leave now”.
 Mr Quang said she had to leave then.

a. “ How old are you?”
She asked me how old I was.
b. “ Is your school near here?”
 He asked me if my school was near there.
c. “ What is the name of your school?”
 She asked me what the name of my school was.
d. “ Do you go to school by bicycle?”
 He asked me if I went to school by bicycle.
e. “Which grade are you in?”
 Lan asked me which grade I was in.
f “ Can you use a computer?”


 He asked me if I could use a computer.
g “ Why do you want this job?”
 She asked me if I wanted that job.
h. “ When does your school vacation start?”
 John asked me when my school vacation started.
