CA 2: SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
Động từ phải hoà hợp với chủ ngữ
• Chủ ngữ số ít (He, She, It ,The boy, The camel ,…) động từ chia số ít . The car was new.
• Chủ ngữ số nhiều: động từ chia số nhiều . The books were on the top shelf.
• Pronouns agree with their antecedents in the same way. These women wash their clothes everyday.
Lưu ý các trường hợp sau: Every man, woman, and child needs love.:
1. Chủ ngữ là 1 danh động từ, đt nguyên thể hay 1 mệnh đề =>Động từ chia số ít
Walking in the rain is not a good idea. To learn a foreign language is necessary.
That you get high grades in the school is very important.
2.Chủ ngữ là 1 nhóm từ => phải tìm từ chính => Động từ hoà hợp với từ đó
A list of new books has been posted in the library The shops along the mall are rather small.
3 .S1 + of,as well as, with, together with, in addition to, along with, accompanied by, no less than,…+S2 =>Động từ hoà hợp với S1
The professor together with his three students has been called to court.
The mayor as well as his councilmen refuses to endorse the bill.
The students along with their form teacher were at the beach yesterday.
4 .Chủ ngữ là đại từ bất định: one, everyone, no one, nobody, anyone, anybody, someone, somebody, everybody, anything, something, nothing, everything =>Động từ để ở số ít
Nobody is at home now. Is there anybody here? Everything has been all right so far.
5. Chủ ngữ kép:
• S1+AND +S2 +…=> Động từ chia số nhiều. England, Scotland and Wales form Great Britain.
John and I are cousins.
*But: The secretary and accountant hasn`t come yet. (Mot nguoi lam hai nhiem vu)
The great doctor and `discoverer is no more.
Whisky and soda has always been his favourite drink.
(Nouns that commonly go together such as: bacon and eggs, bread and, butter, cheese and wine, fish and chips, lemon and oil, tripe and onions, sausages and mash. —ằ• singular verb) ex: - Fish and chips is a popular meal in Britain.
- Fish and chips make a good meal (If we think of the items as "separate", we use plural verb)
NOTE: "Each" or "every" preceding singular subjects joined by "and" takes a singular verb, ex: Each boy and each girl is to work independently.
• S1+ OR +S2 =>Động từ hoà hợp với S2: Has your mother or father given you permission to use the car?
•Either+S1+ or + S2 ( V hoà hợp với S2 : Neither the students nor their teacher regrets the approach of

6. Chủ ngữ là danh từ tập hợp dùng như 1 đơn vị =>V so it ( GROUP / JURY/ ARMY / FAMILY / CLASS /COMMITTEE / TEAM /ENEMY/ COUNCIL...)
The football team practises every day. The herd of elk is in the meadow
The family arrives together at 8.00.
*Danh từ tập hợp chỉ từng thành viên =>V so nhieu The football team buy their own uniforms .
John has just arrived and now the family are all here.
**Các danh từ như: the police, the military, the people, cattle, poultry, clergy,… => V so nhieu
The police are questioning him.
***. COLLECTIVE NOUNS formed by "the + adjective" + PLURAL VERB
- The sick need medical care and tenderness. The American people don`t trust the news
****. COLLECTIVE NOUNS like FURNITURE / LUGGAGE / INFORMATION / KNOWLEDGE / TRAFFIC / EQUIPMENT / SCENERY / MACHINERY... (never has and "s" added to them) + SINGULAR VERB
- The furniture was more expensive than I thought. - Traffic is heavy .
The traffic has increased rapidly in the downtown areas.
