Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a boy, Alexander was very interested in sounds and speech. In 1870, his family decided to move to America. They lived in Boston, where Alexander taught in a school for the deaf. While he was trying to invent a machine to help the deaf hear, Graham Bell had an idea. He decided to work on a new invention which could use electricity to send the human voice from one place to another. For years, Bell and his assistant, Thomas Watson, worked hard day and night. Finally, on March 19th,1876 Watson heard these words clearly from Bell, who was in another room: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you!" That was the beginning of the telephone, a great invention that has greatly changed our lives.
