China said that there was a heavy loss of life in the earthquake which struck Tangshan city yesterday . Surviver said that Tangshan , an industrial city of one million people 160 kilometers east of Beijing , was completely destroyed .
observers living in Beijing said it appeared that only a small part of the one million inhabitants escaped death or injury . Many of the men of Tangshan were working in the mines deep under the earth’s surface when the earthquake occurred . Unfortunately , few of these miners have survived .
A lot of people were also working in the city ‘s offices . Regettably , most were
killed under falling concrete when the buildings collasped . It is thought that ten of thousands of people have been killed . Hardly a building has been left standing.
