I, The past simple tense
Form
-Affirmative sentence: S+V-ed /VPI
-Negative sentence: S+didn’t+V
-Yes/No question:
Did+S+V...?
Yes, S+did.
No, S+didn’t.
I, The past simple tense
2. Use
-use it with finished actions, states or habits in the past when we havea finished time word.
Ex: We saw a good film last week.
-use it with finished actions, states or habits in the past when we know from general knowledge that the time period has finished.
Ex: Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa.
-use it with finished actions, states or habits in the past that we have introduced with the
present perfect or another tense. This is sometimes called `details of news`.
Ex: I`ve hurt my leg. I fell off a ladder when I was painting my bedroom

3. Signal
-ago, an hour ago, one minute ago, in 2011 ..., in 1999 ..., last month, last week, last year, 
last weekend, lastsummer, yesterday, at 5 o`clock.
-When+S+was/were+....., clause (Past simple)
II, The past continous tense
Form
-Affirmative sentence: S+was/were+V-ing
-Negative sentence: S+wasn’t/weren’t+V-ing
-Yes/No question:
Were/Was+S+V-ing?
Yes, S+was/were.
No, S+wasn’t/weren’t.
II, The past continous tense
2. Use
-to describe the background in a story written in the past tense.
Ex: When the shot rang out, she was running towards the river.
-to describe an unfinished action that was interrupted by another event or action.
Ex: I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang.
-to express a change of mind.
Ex: I was going to spend the day at the beach but I`ve decided to get my homework done
instead.
-with `wonder`, to make a very polite request.
Ex: I was wondering if you could baby-sit for me tonight.
II, The past continous tense
3. Signal
-While (In this part of the sentence we usually use Past Progressive.)
Ex: While we were watching TV, Andy was surfing the internet.
-when (In this part of the sentence we usually use the Simple Past.
The Past Progressive is used in the other part of the sentence.)
The ladies were talking when the accident happened.
-at ten o’clock last Sunday

III, The past perfect tense
Form
-Affirmative sentence: S+had+Ved /VPII
-Negative sentence: S+had+Ved /VPII
-Yes/No question:
Had+S+Ved /VPII ?
Yes, S+had.
No, S+hadn’t.

2. Use
-for something that started in the past and continued up to a given time in the past
Ex: She didn’t want to move. She had lived in Liverpool all her life.
-for something we had done several times up to a point in the past and continued to do after that point.
Ex: He had written three books and he was working on another one.
-when we are reporting our experience and including up to the (then) present.
Ex: My eighteenth birthday was the worst day I had ever had.
-for something that happened in the past but is important at the time of reporting.
Ex: I couldn’t get into the house. I had lost my keys.

-By the time
Ex: I‘d finished all the work by the time you called.
-When
Ex: When we arrived at the airport, our flight had already left.
-Before
Ex: Before we sold our car, we had owned it for 12 years.
-Until
Ex: He‘d never met a native English speaker until he visited London.
-Said
Ex: She said that she‘d lost her wallet.

IV, The past perfect continuous tense
1. Form
-Affirmative sentence: S+had+been+V-ing
-Negative sentence: S+had+not+V-ing
-Yes/No question:
Had+S+been+V-ing ?
Yes, S+had.
No, S+hadn’t.

2. Use
-Something that started in the past and continued up to another action or time in the past.
The past perfect continuous tells us `how long`, just like the present perfect continuous, but
this time the action continues up to a point in the past rather than the present.
Ex:I`d been walking for hours when I finally found the house.
-Something that finished just before another event in the past. This is usually used to show
a result at a time in the past. It`s very similar to the present perfect continuous, but the
action finishes before another time in the past, rather than finishing before the present.
Ex: The children had been playing and so the room was a mess!

Ex: I had been working for Nike since 2005.

Ex: They had been watching TV when the lights went off.
-How long
Ex: How long had you been waiting before she came?

Ex: They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.
