Read the passage carefully , then answer the questions .
In the first part of the twentieth century , before a television set was a part of most households , radio programming was different from what it is now . Many people were interested in listening to ‘Story Hour’. Someone read an exciting story , or part of a story , while the listener’s imaginations provided visual images to fit the spoken ones . People listened to serials , stories that were broken into one-hour segments . Because each hour ended with suspense , listener had to tune in at the same time the next day to find out what would happen . Family gathered around the radio at night to hear important news or listen to favorite programs. Radio was important form of home entertainment . However, because of television , radio programming has changed.
Radio stories have become a thing of the past because people prefer both to watch and to hear . Radio is now a medium that is used more often in a car than a home . Because music and news are the easiest types of programs to listen to in a car , they are the most common . Radio , in fact , has become the music medium . . In Britain , natural gas is the most popular fuel for heating homes , and for cooking . It is piped all over the country from the gas fields below the North Sea . Natural gas is used chiefly as a direct source of energy , although it is also used in the chemical industry . At the moment the supply is plentiful , but it will be running short by the end of the century , and will run out during the 21st century unless new supplies are found . We could do without natural gas , as coal gas can be used as a substitute , and there should be enough coal to last for several centuries . Christmas is the biggest festival of the year in most of Britain . Celebrations start properly on 24December , Christmas Eve . It is a family celebration and many of the customs center on children . The traditional Christmas dinner consists of roast turkey and Christmas pudding – a dark , rich mixture of flour , fruit , sugar , nuts , and brandy . Before the dinner people usually pull crackers – small rolls of paper that have gifts , jokes , and party hats inside . Needless to say , large quantities of beer , wine , and spirits are also drunk.

On Boxing Day most people go out to see friends , watch sports events , go to the theater to see pantomime , or increasingly nowadays , go shopping . Most of the large stores start their winter sales on Boxing Day now . But the Christmas holiday is still not over . In fact , many offices and factories close for the whole Christmas period from 24December to 2 January . On NewYear’s Eve there are a lot of parties and at midnight everyone joins hands to sing Auld Lang Syne . The after New year’s Day to sleep it off , that’s Christmas over for another year.
