COMPOUNDS OF IRON
Fe: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6
4s2 3d6
3d6 4s2
Electron configuration of iron:
Which can be abbreviated:
[Ar] 3d6 4s2
Fe: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6
3d6 4s2
Fe2+: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6
Fe3+: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5
Electron configuration:
How many electrons can iron give up?
Ferric ion has semi-saturated electron configuration
I. COMPOUNDS OF IRON (II)
Does ferrous ion easily give up or receive electrons in chemical reaction? Why?
Fe2+ → Fe3+ + 1e
In chemical reations, ferrous ion easily gives up 1 electron to become ferric ion, because it reach a state of semi-saturated.
The featured chemical property of compounds of iron (II) is reducing property.
In addition, ferrous ion can receive 2 electrons to become iron atom.
Fe2+ + 2e → Fe
Ferrous ion express
reducing property when
it react with oxidizers.
Ferrous ion express
oxidizing property when it
react with strong reductants.
1. Ferrous oxide (FeO)
1. Ferrous oxide (FeO)
It is structure of ferrous ion
1. Ferrous oxide (FeO)
It is black solid and not found in nature.
It is unstable.
What subtances can ferrous oxide react with?

Oxidation number of Iron reduces from +2 to 0
So, ferrous ion expresses oxidizing property.
3FeO + NO3- + 10H+ → 3Fe3+ + NO + 5H2O
What method is ferrous oxide prepared?
Ferrous oxide is prepared
by using hydrogen (H2)
or carbon oxide (CO)
reduces ferrous oxide at 500oC
2. Ferrous hydroxide (Fe(OH)2)
Pure ferrous hydroxide (Fe(OH)2) is solid, bluish white, insoluble in water
How does colour of ferrous hydroxide turn, in the air? Why?
In the air, the colour of ferrous hydroxide turn bluish white into red brown. Because it is easily oxidized to ferric hydroxide by oxygen in the air.
I perform an experiment of iron (II) salt solution reacts with alkaline solution and you observe the change colour of ferrous hydroxide.
At first obtained bluish white precipitate, then it will be turned into red-brown precipitate
What method is ferrous hydroxide prepared?
Pure ferrous hydroxide is prepared by pouring iron (II) salt solution in alkaline solution in the absence of air
I perform an experiment of solubility of iron (II) salts in water,
Majority of iron (II) salt dissolves in water.
3. Iron (II) salt
3. Iron (II) salt
FeSO4.7H2O
FeCl2.4H2O
What are the chemical properties of iron (II) salt? When?
- Iron (II) salt express reducing property when it react with oxidizers.
