I. Definition
An essay is:
- a piece of writing several paragraphs long.
- writing about one topic.
Part in an essay
An introductory paragraph:

Topic Sentence

(Concluding Sentence)
+ Paragraph 2
(etc)
A Concluding paragraph
+ Restatement or summary of the main points

II. The introductory paragraph is a part of an essay.
It has 4 purposes:
1.Introducing the topic.
2.Giving a general background.
3.Indicating the overall plan.
4.Arousing the reader’s interest.
Parts in an introductory paragraph:
General statements:
+ Introduce the topic of the essay
+ Give background information on the topic
Thesis statement:
+ States the main topic
+ Lists the subdivisions of the topic
+ Indicate the method of organization
+ Is the last sentence in this paragraph
Example 1
To become a successful writer, students should follow some important steps. Writers need a good background in grammar and vocabulary, skills in writing essays, and skills in editing. (www.edb.utexas.edu)
Example 2
What do you think about banning smoking? The whole country is divided on whether smoking should be banned. I firmly believe that smoking should be outlawed because it endangers everyone’s health; it pollutes the environment, and it drains us of valuable energy.

Do you think that college athletes should be paid more than just tuition? Many people believe that college athletes should get paid while others believe they should not. I
believe that college athletes should be paid because they practice long hours; the schools are profiting through the athletes efforts, and this would make college life much less stressful for the athletes.

III A thesis statement
-is the most important sentence in the introduction.
-state the specific topic
Elements in a thesis statement:
- Interpretation
+ A thesis cannot be a mere statement of fact. It must explain facts to show their significance.
- Precision
+A good thesis is specific to the facts being discussed and shows the precise relationship among them
- Surprise
+A thesis must change a reader’s mind to be of value.
Example 1
A young person in the Middle Ages had fewer options for marriage, family, and personal privacy and freedom than do young adults today.

A healthy person is often described as some one who has a good diet, gets lots of exercise and avoids stress.
