Period 21 Unit 4: Learning a foreign language
Lesson 1: Getting started, listen and read.

I. The Objectives
1/Knowledge:
a/ Topic: Learning a foreign language
b/ Vocabulary:
Examiner, aspect, written examination, oral examination, candidate
c / Grammar:
Past simple tense, Reported speech with Wh-questions, and Yes/no questions
2/Skills:
- Help stutends know some vocabularies about learning a foreign language, listen and read for details about the conversation between Paola and Lan .
- Help students know, understand and then practice the reported speech with Wh-q questions, Yes/no- questions
- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to read the conversation to get details and know what exactly the examiner asked Lan, know some more ways of learning English and understand the reported speech with Wh- questions, Yes/no- questions deeply
- Develop skills: Writing, listening, speaking, reading.
3. Preparations:
- Teacher: Power point, pictures cues, wordcues
- Students: Books, notebooks, subboards/poster
4. Anticipated problems:
- Perharp, sts cannot practice the dialogue well. Students may get confused in using reported speech with Wh-questions, Yes/no-questions.

Greeting: Goodmoring!
Checking attendance: Who is absent today?
Asking for the teaching date: What is the date today?

I. Activity 1 - Warmer
- Ask sts the questions:
“Do you like learning English?”
“Is it an important subject?”
“Is it easy to learn?”
“How do you learn English?”
- Call sts to say out
- Write some ways on BB
- Show some ways of learning English
- Ask sts to read and list their choices
- Ask sts to work with partner and compare their choices, check if the answers are correct or not.
- Get some sts to say out
- Set the scene and go to the lesson
II. Activity 2 . Teaching Vocabulary
- Elicit the vocabulary and guide sts to read
- Written examimation (n) : (picture)
- Oral examination (n):(Picture and explanation)
- Examiner (n) (Picture and explanation)
- Candidate (n) (Picture and explanation)
- Aspect (n) Translation
- Check vocabulary (Rub out and remember)
-Set the scene (Draw the pictures on blackboard and ask sts who they are.)
- Show on the screen a question and run through it
“How many questions did the examiner ask Lan?”
- Ask sts to listen and read, then answer the question.
- Play the tape (2 times)
- Get sts’ answers
- Call sts to practice in pairs (2-3 pairs)
* Grammar: Reported speech
- Set the scene and get the models
- Get form and use from students
a, Reported speech with Wh-Qs
S1 + asked + O + question words + S2 + V(past form)
b, Reported speech with Yes/No-Qs (Revision)
S1 + asked + O + if/whether + S2 + V(past form)
III. Activity 3. Practice: Wordcues
- Give 4 questions and divide class in to 4 groups
- Ask sts to work in groups to change them into reported speech( Write in poster)
1. Where do you come from?
2. Do you like learning English?
3. Why are you studying English?
4. Do you practice speaking English regularly?
- Call sts to show out their answers on BB
- Correct (Sts’ correction first)
IV. Activity 4: Part b on page 33.
- Ask sts to read the conversation again and look at the list of question and check the boxes:
(Work in 4 groups)
- Get feedback: Ask sts to say out the answers(Find the sentences in the conversation)
- Get others to correct (Show the conversation and underline them)
V. Activity 5: Roleplay
- Ask sts to work in pairs
- Give instruction
(No 1 is the examiner and No 2 is the candidate, ask and answer about the ways to study English. No 2 has to remember the question that No 1 has asked, and then report them before class
