Adjectives & adverbs
Using Adverbs
Adverbs modify verbs. They tell you How something is done.
E.g.
How does he she sing? - She sings beautifully.
Rule: Adverbs are often formed by adding -ly to an adjective
E.g. beautiful - beautifully, careful - carefully
Note 1
Some adjs don`t change in the adv form
E.g. fast - fast, hard - hard
good => well
He plays tennis good. (common mistake that many Americans make)
Rule: Advs can also modify an adj. In this case, the adv is placed before the adj.
E.g.
She is extremely happy. They are absolutely sure.
Note 2
Do not use `very` with adjs that express an increased quality of a basic adj
E.g.: good - fantastic
NOT!!: She is a very beautiful woman.
Rule: Advs of frequency (always, never, sometimes, often, etc.) usually come before the main V
E.g.
He is often late for class. Do you always eat in a restaurant? They don`t usually travel on Fridays.
Note 3
Advs of frequency expressing infrequency are not usually used in the negative or question form.
NOT!!: Does she rarely eat fish? They don`t seldom go to the cinema.
Advs of frequency are often placed at the beginning of a sentence.
E.g. Sometimes, he likes to go to museums.
Advs of frequency follow - come after - the verb `to be`.
E.g. He is sometimes late for work.
