Westerners generally admire directness and thus when being introduced to another, a person will look directly at the other person. Many western people regard avoidance of eye contact as a lack of interest or an indication of guilt. Apart from anything else, looking directly at the person being introduced assists an individual to remember the person and the name. Introductions of greeting or acknowledgement of words said in greeting.
