Usage : past perfect tense describes events that happened before an event in the past tense.
For example : When i got up this morning , my father had already left.
Look at this list and guess these things had or hadn’t happened to Sarah in 1973 :

use a personal computer
finish school
hear of Margaret Thatcher
Be aboard
have a favourite pop group
hair / turn grey
have a boyfriend
leave home

Well, let’s see. In 1973 , I’d finish school, but I hadn’t left home by then. I’d seen the Beatle course_on the TV and in concert, too. And my hair was still lovely and fair. It hadn’t turned grey! I’d had a boyfriend, too. We used to go dancing. I’d started work by then – in a film liboratory. I hadn’t heard of Margaret Thatcher, of course. I was so surprised to hear about a woman prime minister. I hadn’t been aboard, either. I hadn’t been anywhere ! I’d had a favourite pop group. They were called T.Rex. I was so sad to hear that the lead singer had died. I hadn’t used a personal computer, of course. They hadn’t been invented!
